Five ways to build a budget and stick to it

  1. Start by writing down a list of your expenses and income. This will help you identify how much money you have to work with and where you can make adjustments.
  2. Set a realistic budget. Consider your lifestyle and prioritize your needs and wants. Make sure you are accounting for all of your incoming and outgoing payments.
  3. Track your spending. A great way to stay on budget is to keep track of where you are spending your money. This will help you identify if you are going over your budget and if you need to make changes.
  4. Make savings a priority. Automate your savings so that it is taken out of your paycheck before you even have the chance to spend it. This will help you reach your goals more quickly.
  5. Set goals and reward yourself. Break down your budgeting goals into smaller, achievable steps. When you reach a goal, reward yourself for a job well done! This will help keep you motivated and on track.

Finalizing, Tracking and Reviewing Your Budget

Now, you’re ready to put all the building blocks together in a final budget. You can document it in a notebook, using a spreadsheet template from Microsoft or Google, or by taking advantage of a budgeting app like MintPocketGuard or Wally. Choose the method that you find easiest to use because regularly tracking your actual monthly expenses will help you stick to your budget.

At least once a year, review your budget to adjust for any changes, such as the impact of inflation or a recession on your finances, a pay raise or the attainment of a financial goal.
